Lyrarakis have been championing native Cretan grape varieties for years, and were among the first to take Vidiano seriously. Thanks in part to their efforts, it's now well-known as the most exciting variety on the island, and one of the best in all Greece. Their Vidiano 'Ippodromos' is a benchmark wine for the variety, and arguably the best wine in their entire, very impressive, range.
Fruit comes from the Ippodromos vineyard in Central Crete. Fermentation begins in stainless steel, but continues in large Austrian oak barrels. The finished wine balances the lively apricot and citrus flavours of Vidiano with a nicely-judged softness from the oak. It has superb balance and great intensity. It is first rate. Wonderful to drink on release, but with the potential to develop further complexity with bottle age.
