"Overachievers in Chianti (as opposed to Chianti Classico) do exist. La Torre alle Tolfe, a beautiful estate a stone's throw away from the Siena city walls, is a prime example." So writes Walter Speller, Italy Editor for JancisRobinson.com. The Torre alle Tolfe wines are made by the brilliant Giacomo Mastretta, who previously established La Porta di Vertine as one of Chianti's finest producers. His organically grown, traditionally made wines are characterised by a gorgeous purity, fine tannins and admirable balance.
Colli Senesi is a zone of Chianti next door to the better-known (and therefore more expensive) Chianti Classio. Torre alle Tolfe's vineyards are relatively high, at 330m above sea level, planted on sandy soil packed with pebbles and marine fossils. Sangiovese (80%) is complemented by local varieties Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo and Colorino, with each vinified separately. The finished blend is a masterclass in balance, with complex savoury aromas mingling with pure red berry fruit. It offers outstanding value.
